Chapter 16
Mr. Gerald Calvin Reynolds?” The deputy said, while standing in front of Big’s cell.
———
After he'd been fed, Big had managed to get a little sleep last night. How, he didn’t know, that ledge was still as uncomfortable as before his arraignment. Maybe, because he knew he wouldn’t be in the cramped smelly cell much longer, and was over tired. When a man gets tired enough, he can sleep on a pile of rocks if he has to. Actually, a man has no choice — the body will demand that he sleep.
———
“Yeah, what you want?” Big asked, while trying to balance himself on the narrow ledge, and not looking at the deputy.
“What do you mean, what do I want? Get your fat convicted ass up, and stand at attention, put your hands on your fat ass head, and turn around. I’m here to take your convicted carcass to the other jail to wait for your sentencing.”
Big just received a reality check. He discovered what the next few years of his life would be like. He scrambled to his feet and did as was told, putting his hands on top of his head. The cell door was unlocked, and two officers came in and cuffed his hands behind his back. They needed two sets of cuffs. One set just wouldn’t reach. They pressed the cuffs into his wrist, almost cutting off the circulation.
“Officer, can you loosen those cuffs a touch, they’re hurting me?”
“Shut up con, and keep your frigging mouth shut, or I might tighten them more. Got that, convict?”
“Yes sir, officer.” Big responded, breaking out in an instant sweat.
He could tell the difference between being a suspect and a convict. Up until he'd been found guilty by the judge, although, not treated like a model citizen, wasn’t abused. Now that he was a tried, and convicted, inmate, he had very few rights, and even less respect from the cops. I wonder if I should have listened to that lawyer, and pleaded not guilty? Maybe this crap might be more than I bargained for, he was beginning to realize.
One of the officers took hold of the tight cuffs behind his back, and giving them a snatch, told Big to get the move on. Crossing back under the street, through the tunnel, Big was led to the jail's administration. His cuffs still on, and really beginning to hurt his wrist, he was told to toe a line on the floor. His mug shot was taken, and he was fingerprinted. Other critical information was gathered, including, digital photos of scars, tattoos, and other distinguishing marks, which was entered into the justice system's computers to later be used by the police for identification in other cases.
Every time he was told to do something, the officers called him either con, or convict, never letting him forget that he was now officially a felon.
He was told to strip naked, to bend over, and grab his cheeks, where he was full body cavity searched. He was then
